Frequently asked questions
Why do some videos have no 1280×720 version?
YouTube doesn't generate a large cover for every video: for older uploads and low-quality recordings the biggest available size is 480×360. We only show sizes that actually exist.
Does the thumbnail go through your server?
No. The page works out the direct address of the image on YouTube's servers, and your browser fetches the file from there. We don't copy, store or cache it.
Can I use the thumbnail myself?
A thumbnail is a copyrighted work, and the rights belong to the video's author. You may use it freely in cases the law allows, such as quoting it in a review or a news story. Anything else needs the rights holder's permission.
Can I download the video itself?
No — that's against YouTube's terms, and we don't offer such a tool. If you already have a video file, you can convert it, compress it or extract its audio with our media tools.
